Welcome to Montville Art Gallery

Robert Hagan
Born in 1947, in the northern New South Wales town of Murwillumbah, Robert spent most of his childhood in an around the beautiful Tweed Valley. Most of his boyhood memories are of times spent in small Chillingham and the fishing village of Brunswick Heads. He won a scholarship to Newcastle University and four years later graduated with an Arts degree in Economics and a diploma in Education. He became a teacher, a profession he endured for about six years. In 1974, Robert had his first exhibition at the Woollahra Galleries. His second exhibition was shared with his two brothers John and David and took place at the prestigious Holdsworth Gallery. Neither exhibition was hugely successful but they were at least encouraging. The following year Robert was forced to decide whether hed become a subject master at Sydney Grammar School or a full time artist. He chose the latter and then set about teaching himself to paint. His big breakthrough came on Freshwater Beach where he made the simple observation that learning starts with the first step not the fiftieth. He discovered that at the seaside, nature is expressed in its simplest form and he needed just three colours to replicate the sky, water and beach. He spent the next few years, painting every sort of life and mood on the beach, especially pelicans. Seascapes still feature largely in his repertoire. In 1986 he went to Freemantle and painted several paintings inspired by the Americas Cup. In 1991, he moved to San Diego to paint the Americas Cup battle. In 1995, he again painted the Americas Cup and won an international maritime painting competition. This win opened many new doors for him in the United States. He was invited to exhibit in prestigious galleries, give seminars, and appear on television and judge art competitions. Between painting and losing golf balls, Robert has found time to build a hotel in Thailand and write several coffee table books about his art. More recently he has appeared in a series of thirty minute episodes called a Splash of Colour on Discovery HD.
